"I advance steadfastly that gender is a social language. It is not biological (essentialism), nor is it compulsorily performative (Butlerism). The structure of our social order — the society in which we find ourselves — is shaped by this language of gender, often with just two principal dialects, femininity and masculinity (some regional social orders do have three, and, rarely, even more dialects)… So if gender only has a couple or a few principal dialects, then how in the world does this allow for variety?"
