On the popular petition site that I use very avidly called changed.org, calls on seventeen magazine to print an un-altered, un-photo-shopped models once a month to further improve body positivity. A 14 year old girl named Bluhm is the head of all the hullabaloo on change.org, saying she can relate to woman all over the world when it comes to not identifying to the woman you see in the media, and she hopes to change this.
“I started this petition to help girls see that they’re not alone,” Bluhm added. “Seventeen Magazine is supposed to be a relatable magazine, right? How can we relate to computer altered photos? Seventeen is popular with my friends and lots of teen girls. If they agree to print one unaltered spread a month, they could start a trend that will help so many girls like me feel better about their bodies.”
Think about it. A 14 year old girl has started a national conversation about body positivity? Woah.
“A fourteen year-old girl in Maine has tapped into the national conversation on young girls and body image,” said Change.org Senior Campaigner Shelby Knox. “She’s a total powerhouse, walking around with her friends at school to gather handwritten signatures for her petition. Between that and social media, Julia’s managed to recruit more than 7,000 supporters from 15 states. It’s been incredible to watch her campaign take off.”
This girl reminds me a lot of me when I started this blog, 16 and no where to go but tumblr ha ha. But in all seriousness, this is so amazing, I’m almost at a loss for words. I’m definitely going to ask you all to head on over and show some support to her petition since it’s exactly what we do here, but also take a deep breath and notice the strides we are taking. It’s a problem that needs to be changed and with the last two years of running this blog I have seen the conversation get bigger than it ever has before. Remember even if the world doesn’t change tomorrow, our perception of it can, and with that we have our voice, and with that we can provide change.

As the plus size model scene is gaining more prominence and attention, do you think this can keep it up? Like when twiggy made her appearance, can this be the new trend? Now when answering, lets remember Crystal Renn blowing up as a model, through plus size modeling. Lizzie Miller with Glamour. Who can forget the controversy over Ashley Graham and the oh so sexy lingerie ad for Lane Bryant that ended up receiving millions of views online, and the model featured on the Tonight Show. Then after being shunned, then earned the nation’s top advertising award. Also don’t forget the new FFF week, and more clothing stores extending their sizes, and fashion taste.
